Inara is a "Companion" (cross between a legal prostitute and a geisha.) She is nicknamed "the ambassador" by the crew, because without her, they would not be able to land on some planets. She rents a shuttle from Serenity to reach her clients. It is somewhat uncertain as to why she left the core planets to sail with Serenity. Her position as a Companion has helped the crew out of several tight situations in the past.

I find it interesting how they only call her the Ambassador in the first show, after that Mal just calls her a whore.
Well, it really only works a situational gag once, so I guess Joss decided to give it an honorable death.
