Serenity

1 day more...

Serenity

The tenth crew member is Serenity. Serenity is a Midbulk Transport, standard radion-accelerator core. Class code 03-K64, but that was more than you wanted to know, right. You can see from the picture why the show is called "firefly," or at least I hope you can. You can also probably tell that Serenity is not a big ship. Compared to an Alliance cruiser, she is miniscule. She is agile and dependable though, and Mal would do most anything to keep her flying.

Mal

2 more days...

Mal

Captain Malcom Reynolds owns Serenity. He fought for the Independence (Brown Coats) in the War for Unification, And though he was on the losing side, he is still not convinced it was the wrong one. After Fighting in the bloodiest battle, The Battle for Serenity Valley, Mal was out of the war. The brown coats were though, so Mal bought a ship, and named her Serenity, because after you've been in Serenity, you never leave. Mal runs his ship on a thin stretch of space between the Alliance and the Reavers. He will take any job to keep Serenity flying, legal or not. His crew is his family, and he would fight to the death for any one of them.

Sorry

Just a quick note to say sorry about not posting on Monday, but I was asleep in bed most of the day, and it just slipped my mind. Going to sleep now, very tired, don't like Chem. Lab.

River

3 more days...

River

River Tam is Simon's genius younger sister. She was recruited for a special Alliance run Academy while in her early teen years, and jumped at the chance. Soon, Simon started receiving strange letters from River. They talked about things that never happened, people that didn't exist, and most confusing of all, spelling mistakes (River started correcting Simon's spelling when she was three.) Simon figured out it was a code. It said "They're hurting us." He paid off some people, and was able to get River smuggled out, and onboard Serenity. River is incredibly brilliant, and to say anymore would be full of SPOILERS.

Zoe

4 days left...

Zoe

She is Serenity's first mate, and Wash's Wife. She served under Mal during the war for independence, and was with him in Serenity Valley. She is a tough fighter, and a crack shot. She would follow Mal to the ends of the 'Verse, knowing that he will lead her back. This has caused some tension in her marriage, because as Wash would put it "There's obeying going on right under my nose!" Zoe is not afraid to tell Mal that she doesn't think his plan is good though, and is proven right fairly often.

Wash

5 days left...

Wash

Wash is Serenity's pilot. He is also married to Zoe, the ship's first mate. Wash is an incredible pilot, and can handle Serenity better than any other pilot. He is never short of a witty retort or excellent joke. There appears to be a rivalry between Wash and Jayne, and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Wash is always very laid back, to the point that in flight school he was laconic.

Jayne

6 days left...

Jayne

Jayne my be a girls name, but Jayne ain't no girl. He is the hired muscle onboard Serenity. He knows more about inflicting a world of hurt on the other guy then most do. He is not exactly the most trustworthy man, as he will sell his services to the highest bidder, even if that means turning on his current employer. Jayne is the type of man who would still go for his gun, even if he was outnumbered 20 to 1. There seems to be only one thing that Jayne really fears, and that thing is the Reavers. Even though He fears Reavers, Jayne would still go down fighting, being that kind of guy.

Kaylee

7 days left...

Kaylee

Kaylee is Serenity's mechanic, and is probably the only one to love the ship as much as Mal does. She is an intuitive mechanic, and can usually tell when something is going to break, and fix it before it does. She is Serenity's second mechanic, replacing the first, who couldn't keep Serenity flying. She is the eternal optimist, finding everything an exciting adventure. She is very interested in Simon Tam, but also finds him to proper some times. Everyone in the crew feels very protective of Kaylee, including Jayne, though he tries to hide it.

Plague Breaks Out, Thousands Dead!

Did the title get your attention? Good. It might not be a real Plague, but it has already killed thousands! World of Warcraft is a MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role-playing Game) made by Blizzard Entertainment. It is one of the most popular, with more than 4 million regular players. Recently some higher level players battled a new demon put in by Blizzard as a new challenge. It appears this guy had a Parthian shot though, as his blood causes an infection that kills most players instantly. Now, this should have only affected the few players who were there when the demon died, but due to a bug in the programming, the players became carriers of the plague, and infected others in the world. Apparently the the Orcish capital of Ogrimmar was the first city to fall victim to the plague, and its population was decimated. The computer controlled npcs (non-playable creatures) are not killed by the plague, but they are capable of spreading it. Reports from the disaster zones speak of hundreds of corpses lying in streets of infected towns.
I wonder if Blizzard will add this to the Warcraft story line? I wouldn't put it past them. I wonder what Chesterton would say about us making imaginary worlds, and then letting disease into them? I think Chesterton would have loved playing World of Warcraft, I think he would have been a Paladin. He would have formed his own clan, whose sole purpose would be to save the damsel from the dragon. In a way, games like these are a way to reclaim the fairy land that we so foolishly discarded.
I personally do not play World of Warcraft. I become addicted to games like this far to easily, and this is the most addicting game out on the market right now. I hope to play it sometime in the future though. Maybe when I do, I'll form a clan of my own, and call it the Thursday's Knights, or some such thing.

Dr. Simon Tam

8 Days left...

Dr. Simon Tam

Simon Tam was born in the Core to wealthy parents, studied at the best schools, and became a first rate trauma surgeon on the planet Osiris. He had a good life, but he gave it all up to save his sister, River, from an Alliance "academy." (more on the academy in River's bio.) He is now on the run from the Alliance, and is acting as Serenity's medic. He is not the best at interacting with the crew, much to the annoyance of the Mechanic, Kaylee. He is part of the crew though, and the captain, Mal, will defend him from anyone.

Inara

9 days left...

Inara

Inara is a "Companion" (cross between a legal prostitute and a geisha.) She is nicknamed "the ambassador" by the crew, because without her, they would not be able to land on some planets. She rents a shuttle from Serenity to reach her clients. It is somewhat uncertain as to why she left the core planets to sail with Serenity. Her position as a Companion has helped the crew out of several tight situations in the past.

Chemistry Lab

I don't know why they make me take Gen. Chem. I'm a physics major! I see why they insist I take lots of Math, but I don't get the Chem. requirement. You see in the ranking of the Natural Sciences, it goes
Math
Physics
Chemistry
Biology
You need to know everything above your field to understand your discipline. So why do they make me take Gen. Chem.?
Sorry about this little rant. I just got out of my Chemistry lab, so I'm a bit tired. Normally, I have my Chemistry class right before the lab, but I got to the class, and there was a note on the door that it had been canceled for today, so it could have been worse. The thing about chemistry labs, is you feel dirty for the rest of the day, even after you spend ten minutes scrubbing your hands.

Well, enough of that. 10 days until Serenity!!! I have a group together to take a cab into town to go see it opening night. Starting today, I will post one update on a crew member of Serenity until we reach sept. 30th.

Yours in Christ,
Thursday

Shepherd Book

I couldn't decide which order to put these crew bios in, but I think this should work.

Shepherd Book

Book is a "Shepherd," or preacher. He is acting as a missionary in the outer rim of planets. We know very little about him, other than that he comes from the Southdown Abbey, and that he never married. However, there is another side to Shepherd Book. He knows more about crime than most Preachers do (Making him somewhat of a Father Brown.) He is also given very good treatment by the Alliance, something not normally given, even to "Shepherds." There are many theories as to who Book really is, but most are too spoilerific for me to get into here.
To sum up, Book=enigma.

I Know, I know...

I know I was going to get some writing done on Dake this weekend, and there is still no update to the site. I have a good excuse though! I went to check back at the site of those wonderfully heretical rad trads "Tradition in Action (TIA)." Awhile back they posted an article "refuting" distributism based on the personal sins of one of its developers, Eric Gill. You can find the article here. Basically, the piece is an "ad hominem" garbage, and was shocked to find out they thought it was a good argument. I guess others thought the same way, as they have an entire section devoted to rebuttals of the piece. Here's the link. At one point, TIA even admits that "ad hominem" arguments are fallacious, but claim that it doesn't matter. In another post, TIA merely accuse the letter writer of using a fake name, ignoring his letter almost completely. So most of the weekend was spent reading up on Eric Gill, his art, ect., and trying to decide if I should send them a letter as well.
I haven't written a letter yet, but still might. I thought if I put this up, a bunch of Chesterton fans will rally around distributism, and write letters of their own to TIA.
Well, happy writing!

Yours in Christ,
Thursday

P.S. Mention you heard about TIA on my site!

The Dake Bible Revisited

Hello again,
I was just doing a little search through the referring pages to my blog and found out that I am number 4 on msn when you search for "Finis Dake." This is a good opportunity, and I would hate to miss it. Now I am going to say "Dake Study Bible," and "Finis Jennings Dake" as many times as possible in my next few posts, so I can get up even higher on the results page when people search for information about "Finis Dake," or "The Dake Study Bible." I hope to do some serious writing this weekend and post a longer entry on why the followers of "Finis Dake," and others who use "The Dake Study Bible" are members of a cult. Do you think that is enough references to "The Dake Study Bible" to get me up slightly higher the next time the "crawler" comes by?

Yours in Christ,

Having been unable to live down the fake cigarette, (yes, it is fake, I do not smoke) I am changing my picture to this one. The change will most likely only be temporary, while I search for another photo I like.
I'll post a proper update later on today.

I'm on google!

It took long enough, but if you search for "Thursday's Trifles" on google, you will finely find my site. And I even bear no ill will against Chesterton and Friends for being the top hit on the search. In other news, Serenity made the Box Office Prophets number one pick for fall movies. Here's the link.
I got my first lab coat yesterday, so I'm pretty sure I'm a real scientist now. If I ever have a picture of me in it, I'll be sure to post it, so you all can see me in all my sciency glory.

And now for something completely different. I recently purchased a bottle of "William Grant's Finest Scotch Whisky: The Family Reserve." It is a blend of several of the single malt scotches that the distilleries owned by William Grant and sons ltd.. For a blend, it is quite good, and at $24.00 CDN, quite a bargain. To any of the scotch drinkers out there, I would recommend picking up a bottle. Though if you do, I find it is improved with a waterback of about 4 parts to 1 scotch to water.

That's about it for today. Now that I am in a good routine, I hope to post at least once every day.

Thursday

No Title

I know I said I would update at lunch, and I didn't; so I'm updating now. Better late than never, right. So, nothing much went on today. Fridays are somewhat easy, as I only have 3 classes, and only two of them are back-to-back. I really have nothing to write about, it is actually quite sad. Well, I could mention "21 days till Serenity!!!" I need to find an english speaking theater near me so I can go see the movie, because otherwise I'm stuck. I already checked, and the campus theater is not going to show it this semester. I'm sure someone will rip a copy, and post it online, but could I rip off a movie I badly want to do well?
I guess I could also mention the ipod nano, which apple just announced. It is thinner than a number two pencil, and able to fit in the change pocket of a pair of jeans comfortably. I guess thats all.

Yours in Christ,
Thursday

Fortune Smiles upon me!

I'v been a bit busy these last few days trying to iron out my course schedule for this year, but everything seems to be all set now. The bit of good news is that the Physics lab that I was supposed to have on Fridays, from 13:30 to 16:30 (yes, on FRIDAYS!) has been moved to Thursdays. This makes my Fridays a bit less long, and allows me to go to Plato Group! For a guy who is taking all math and science courses, a little philosophy on friday evenings is truly a blessing.

In other news, I was buying a bunch of posters to fill up my wall space, and found my two favorite paintings by Dali; The Last Supper, and Christ of St. John of the Cross.

I have to go to my Physics class now, but I will come back and grab my computer before lunch (low battery, I need to let it charge), and update a bit more.

Going away present

I received this gift from my spiritual director as a going away present. It is Christ Pantokrator, and I think it is truly awesome. It has a place of honor in my dorm room. I just wish I could put a votive candle with it, but there is a strict no open flames policy in the dorm, so oh well.

Viral Marketing

I have seen at least three videos in a viral marketing campaign for the movie Serenity. I haven’t checked fireflyfans.net for a good week now, so more may have surfaced. These videos center around the enigmatic River Tam, and her time in an alliance academy for the brilliant. Be warned, these videos are not for the faint of heart (well at least the first one isn’t.) You can find them if you go to fireflyfans.net (link in sidebar) and do some searching. These vids contain no spoilers, and do not even deal with the same time as the movie (which comes out in 26 days!!!)

Yours in Christ,
Thursday

UPDATE:
I checked ff.net, only three videos so far. . .

UPDATE: I did a bad job searching before, there are 5 videos. It appears that these might be it though.

Sorry

First, sorry about not updating the blog for more than a week. I have been busy getting ready for University. I am writing this in a motel room, where I am staying until I move in tomorrow. Feel free to call me lazy, or some such thing, using the comments button. On that note, let me tell you that I have now opened comments to everybody. You no longer need to be a member of blogger to leave comments. I have a couple of blog entries in the fire right now, and hope to post them tomorrow, this was just a little entry to say I haven’t forgotten about you all. Also, look for much more frequent updates in the coming weeks.

Yours in Christ,
Thursday

UPDATE:

I am now in my Dorm, with internet that actually works.
